O soul norte-americano é cheio de artistas, assim como o samba e a mpb são aqui no Brasil. Alguns desses artistas viram lendas vivas ainda no auge de seus estilos musicais. Muitos não fazem sucesso, mesmo que tenham muito talento. Outros ganham reconhecimento em outros países, como vimos ser o caso de J.J. Barnes. Já outros caras só vão ter o devido respeito no post-mortem.

É o caso de um cara que hoje é considerado um clássico do final dos 60: Baby Huey. Nascido James Ramey em 17 de agosto de 1944 em Richmond, Indiana, EUA. Em 63 ele formou a banda Baby Huey & The Babysitters junto com o trompetista Melvin Jones e o guitarrista Johnny Ross. A banda sempre fora popular na região, através de suas performances ao vivo. Huey, que era um camarada bem gordo (chegou a pesar 200 quilos) e tinha vários problemas com as drogas. Infelizmente, Huey faleceu de ataque cardíaco em 28 de outubro de 1970. Nunca chegou a ver seu álbum ser lançado.

Este disco foi lançado em 71, com a produção de Curtis Mayfield. Ele conta com algumas composições de Mayfield, uma ou duas do próprio Huey e um cover A Change Is Gonna Come. Aliás, ótimo cover. Recomendo também o cover de California Dreamin' e Hard Times. Este disco é um grande exemplo de como a soul music deve ser.

The north american soul scene is as full of artists as samba and mpb ones are here in Brazil. Some of these artists become livin' legends still in their days. Many don't achieve any success, even though they are quite talented. Some gain their recognition in other countries, as we know, that was the case of J.J. Barnes. But there are other fellas that only get their due respect in the post mortem.

That is the case of a man who is nowadays considered on the classic singers from the late 60's: Baby Huey. Born James Ramey in august 17, 1944, at Richmond, Indiana. In 63 he founded the band Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters with trumpetist Melvin Jones and guitar player Johnny Ross. The band was popular at the region for its live performances, even tho they never got to record anything for a while. Huey, that was a really fat fella (over 400 pounds by the time of his death), and had troubles with heavy drugs. Unfortunately, Huey died of a heart attack in october 28, 1970. He was 26 years old and never saw their record come out.

This album as released in 1971 and was produced by Curtis Mayfield. It's tracklist includs several Mayfield's compositions, a couple of Huey's own and a great cover of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come. I'd also recommed the cover of California Dreamin' and the excelent Hard Times. But this whole record is an awesome example of what soul music is all about.
