O Grateful Dead foi uma das maiores bandas de rock da história, não há dúvidas sobre isso. Os caras formaram uma identidade única, com uma sonoridade que influenciou gerações de artistas. Mas nem só de rock viveram os deadheads: não, há muito mais fundido naquele som que transitava entre a psicodelia, o blues, o country e outros estilos de raiz, constituindo, junto com gente como a The Band, por exemplo, as bases do que hoje é chamado de "Americana" (a saber, um gênero que une essas raízes em um som único). The Music Never Stopped, coletânea lançada em 1995 pela Shanachie Records, constitui-se, portanto, como uma viagem através dessas origens musicais dos Deads. A coletânea reúne versões originais de músicas que o Grateful Dead já gravou e a capa, da autoria de Robert Crumb, mostra esses artistas tocando para um grupo de deadheads.
Começando com Obray Ramsey, um instrumentista das antigas conhecido pelo seu trabalho com o banjo, The Music... nos leva através do folk, do country, do blues, do R&B e do early rock n roll junto com gente graúda como as lendas Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Rev. Gary Davis, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Chuck Berry e Buddy Holly. Mas, além dessas unanimidades, há espaço também pra gente que, como o Obray, não chegou a ficar muito conhecida por aqui, como o cantor de country blues Henry Thomas, e Bonnie Dobson, cantora e compostiora canadense de folk, além das maravilhosas Dixie Cups, tradicionalíssimo grupo de Nova Orleans, e do cantor e guitarrista das Bahamas, Joseph Spence. Bettye Lavette é uma dessas pessoas injustiçadas pelo mundo da música. Dotada de uma voz poderosa - que pode rivalizar com as de uma Etta James ou de uma Mavis Staples, por exemplo - e de uma incrível versatilidade, nossa cantora nunca recebeu, até recentemente, as devidas oportunidades de mostrar o seu trabalho consistente e de qualidade. Agora, maturada pelos anos, como um bom vinho, Lavette está aí para nos tocar o coração. Podemos dizer que Bettye se encaixa num movimento de "redescoberta" semelhante ao que ocorreu com Sharon Jones, que também só conseguiu chegar ao sucesso já com uma certa idade, e também, embora só depois das duas supracitadas senhoras, Charles Bradley e Lee Fields. Assim como Jones, Bradley e Fields, o estilo de Bettye Lavette foi muito beneficiado pela experiência que só os anos podem conferir, tornando sua voz num instrumento que reflete a vida humana quase em sua totalidade - seja na dor, na alegria, na doença ou no amor.
A Woman Like Me foi seu primeiro disco de estúdio desde há muito tempo, já que seu único álbum propriamente lançado foi Tell Me A Lie, que saiu pela Motown em 82. Neste trabalho, Bettye agarra a chance que lhe é dada com unhas e dentes e mostra o quão lutadora pode ser com um microfone na mão - nas palavras de Hal Hollowitz, do site Allmusic, ela geme, grita, uiva, ruge e implora em A Woman Like Me. Em 12 faixas, produzidas por Dennis Walker (que já havia trabalhado com Robert Cray), a cantora saída de Detroit transita entre o blues, o R&B clássico e o soul dos anos 60 e 70.
A temática, como não poderia deixar de ser em um álbum deste calibre, envolve o ser humano; suas paixões, mais especificamente, como a maioria dos bons discos de soul. Na faixa de abertura, "Serves Him Right", um R&B mais levado para o blues, Lavette já começa com força, mandando pro inferno o cara que lhe partir o coração. Já em "When The Blues Catch Up To You", o negócio é um blues direto e reto, feito nos moldes de chamado e resposta, com uma bela guitarra atendendo aos apelos de Bettye. Há, ainda, canções sensíveis como "Thinkin' 'Bout You" e "Salt On My Wounds"; faixas com linhas de baixo com um groove matador, como "When A Woman's Had Enough"; e ainda mais blues, como a excelentíssima "Hey, Hey Baby (Betty's Blues)". Enfim, é um disco completo, uma experiência que engloba vários geêeros e os torna uma parte essencial do ser de Bettye Lavette.
Já falei diversas vezes sobre Dr John e também sobre Nova Orleans. Falar do doutor e da cidade por vezes é confuso: pode ficar difícil saber onde começa um e onde termina o outro. O doutor é uma verdadeira enciclopédia da música daquele peculiar cantinho da Louisiana, cercado por águas e diferentes culturas; e para além disso, ele assume a responsabilidade de divulgar os problemas e demandas da Cidade Crescente. Em Goin' Back To New Orleans, Mac Rabennack se junta a um time local de feras da música para celebrar a tradição cultural de sua cidade natal. Em 18 faixas, Doc e seus parceiros percorrem o jazz, o blues, o R&B, a música nativa, o soul e o fonk (nome que Mac deu à sua própria sonoridade).
Seja em temas próprios (como Litenie des Saints, faixa com clima fúnebre que abre os trabalhos, e Fess Up, uma demonstração de classe à frente dos teclados), ou em versões impressionantes (como I Tought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say, composta por Jelly Roll Morton, Goodnight Irene, parceria de Leadbelly e Alan Lomax, ou You Rascal You, de Sam Theard), o que John nos mostra é uma versatilidade magistral, digna da variedade de sons de sua cidade. Todavia, o grande destaque do disco vai para sua faixa de encerramento: composta por Joe Liggins, a faixa que dá nome ao disco, Goin' Back To New Orleans, é realmente uma pérola atemporal, um verdadeiro hino.
