O número de bandas que surgiram no final dos anos 60, em especial entre 68 e 69, foi incrível. Muitas delas lançaram apenas um disco, às vezes dois, algunas alcançaram muito sucesso na época, outras nem tanto. Bandas como Creedence encontraram seu fim ainda nos anos 70, mesmo com todo o sucesso que fizeram. Foi também o caso dos nossos homenageados do dia: o Bread.

A banda se formou em 69, depois que o baixista/guitarrista/tecladista Robb Royer apresentou o vocalista e compositor David Gates ao guitarrista Jimmy Griffin. O primeiro disco da banda, o homônimo de 69, alcançou apenas a modesta 127º posição na Billboard, sem emplacar nenhum hit.

Porém as composições da dupla Griffin e Gates, altamente refinadas, com lindas melodias e suaves harmonias, lhes rendeu uma posição muito mais a par de seu talento em 1970. Com o álbum On The Waters, o grupo chegou ao 12º lugar da Billboard, emplacando o single Make It With You como hit nº 1. O grupo ainda lançaria mais três discos de estúdio antes que as relações entre os compositor Griffin e Gates ficassem insuportáveis. Em 73, a banda se separa. Há uma reunião em 76 e mais um disco é lançado em 77. Apesar do sucesso do disco e da turnê, as tensões entre os músicos não havia diminuído. A banda encerra, enfim, suas atividades, embora tenham se reunido para uma turnê comemorativa dos 25 anos da banda em 1996.

O disco que estamos postando hoje é o seu segundo e um dos melhores. Contém seu maior hit, Make It With You. Mas destaco também a excelente Why Do You Keep Me Waiting e a carinhosa I Want You With Me. É importante exaltar o forte da banda: as harmonias vocais. Vale à pena!

The amount of bands that appeared on the late 60's, specially between 68 and 69, was indeed amazing. Many of them have released only one record, sometimes two; some of them had a lot of success back in those days, some didn't. Some bands, like Creedence, found their end in the 70's, in spite of all their fame. That's also the case of today's post: the Bread.

The band was formed in 69, after the bassist/guitarrist/keyboardist Robb Royer presented the singer and composer David Gates to the guitarrist and also composer Jimmy Griffin. The band's first album, the homonym released in 69, reached only the modest 127th position at Billboard's pop chart, and didn't score any hits.

But Griffin and Gate's compositions, highly refined, with beautiful melodies and incredible harmonies, gave the band a much better position at the charts during 1970. With On The Waters, the group made it to the 12th at Billboard, scoring their only number 1 hit, Make It With You. They would still release another three studio albums before the relationship between Griffin and Gates would crumble and become unbearable. In 73, the band splits. In 76, they try to reunite and a new record comes out in 77. In spite of the album and the tour's success, the tension among the musicians didn't become lighter. The band finally breaks up for good, even tho they got together once more in 96, for a 25th anniversary tour.

This album we're posting today, their second one, is one of their best. And I'd even go further: one the best from the 70's! It holds Bread's greastest hit, Make It With You. But it has some other beautiful songs. I'd highlight the excelent Why Do You Keep Me Waiting and the warm I Want You With Me. It's important to make a point here: their vocal harmonies are incredible, worth to be compared to the Beatles or Cross, Stills & Nash. Really worth cheking it out!
